Newest Release of Ambassador Edge Stack features New Service Preview capabilities to Improve Development Cluster Collaboration

June 16, 2020 | 3 min read

Boston, MA – June 16, 2020 – Datawire, the company behind the most popular Kubernetes-native API gateway, Ambassador, announced new capabilities to Edge Stack that  make it easier for developers to benefit from the enhanced collaboration and reduced costs of a single, shared dev environment.

Today, many organizations leverage duplicate cloud environments for microservice testing and development, which creates siloed environments that do not enable the collaboration and efficiency necessary to rapidly create better applications.

Service Preview improves the utilization of existing cloud environments and supports better  developer productivity and experience. In the newest release of Service Preview, developers can preview and share changes they’ve made locally before submitting them to the shared development cluster. These previews are created using the live version of the shared cluster, but do not impact the shared cluster or the rest of the team working on it.

Service Preview leverages Telepresence and the fine-grained layer seven traffic management available with the Ambassador Edge Stack to allow multiple developers to preview their changes to their microservice before merging them into a shared staging environment. Service Preview accelerates the inner development loop, the process of writing, building, and debugging code before sharing the changes publicaly or with the team.

Before you push a change, developers  may want to ask their co-worker for feedback. Developers can now make a change to your local microservice and then send someone a browser preview link. No need for that person to have Service Preview installed and no need for them to download a sketchy-looking browser extension.

Additionally, automatic sidecar injection is now available with Service Preview, so that you skip a manual configuration step that is not straightfoward for all Kubernetes developers. You still have the option to configure the Traffic Agent sidecar manually.
